Mining
According to the Arizona Mining Association, in 2015, there were 22 major mines in Arizona. Mines produce cement, coal, copper, molybdenum, potash, gold, lime, and uranium. These 22 mines are producing materials that will be used for mobile communications, national security, renewable energy, technology, medical care, transportation, aircrafts, soaps, fertilizer, roads, buildings, water and waste treatment, steel manufacturing and metallurgy, sugar refining, jewelry, and energy fuels.
All these things are important to us in our societies. Yet, to get to have these things, we are impacting our environment in negative ways. Mining can result in erosions, formation of sinkholes, soil and groundwater contamination, and loss of biodiversity.
I feel torn on which side to uphold of the double-edge sword that is mining. At first it may appear beautiful with its multiple colors brightly lit against the blue Arizona sky with its interesting rock formations, but upon further inspection the unpleasant reality comes to light.
